Artifitial Intelligence, Generative AI, and LLMs

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI) and what are its limitations?
- What it is: Generally, artificial intelligence is a machine’s ability to perform some cognitive functions we usually associate with human minds.
- Limitation: One limitation of AI is “Black Box AI, ” which refers to machine learning algorithms that are opaque or inaccessible to human understanding about how they’ve arrived at the conclusions they produce.
What is Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and what are some concerns about them?
- What it is: Generative AI is the class of AI models that emulate the structure and characteristics of input data in order to generate derived synthetic content. This can include images, videos, audio, text, and other digital content.
- How it works: They are AI model that is trained on broad data. These models generally:
- Use self-supervision
- Contain at least tens of billions of parameters
- Applicable across a wide range of contexts.
- Limitation: Recently, society has started to consider the harmful impacts of human biases in AI systems.
What are Large Language Models (LLMs) and what are their limitations?
- What it is: Large language models (LLMs) are best known as the technology that underlies chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini.
- How it works: At a basic level, LLMs work by receiving an input or prompt, calculating what is most likely to come next, and then producing an output or completion.
- Limitation: One big risk is Artificial hallucination, which according to OpenAI, refers to the phenomenon of a machine, such as a chatbot, generating seemingly realistic sensory experiences that do not correspond to any real-world input. This can include visual, auditory, or other types of hallucinations. The data it generates is a mix of true and completely fabricated responses.
