Guidelines for the Georgetown Community on Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence

Generative AI at Georgetown

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content by learning from existing data. It uses advanced algorithms to generate text, images, and audio, simulating human creativity (“AI”). The university recognizes there is transformative potential of AI but also recognizes that as we strive to leverage its capabilities, we must adhere to Georgetown’s core principles, institutional values, and existing policies.

Use of AI by members of the Georgetown community must remain aligned with current university policies. These guidelines were developed by the Office of General Counsel and University Information Services in consultation with many members of the university community beginning in January 2024 and informed by best practices within the higher education community.  These guidelines generally situate the responsible use of AI by members of the Georgetown community in the context of already existing Georgetown policies and values. They are not intended as legal advice or an exhaustive set of best practices. These guidelines may be updated over time to reflect changes in the regulatory environment, industry standards, and technology.
